These paintings are anchored by a horizon line—a constant element in my work for over 20 years—meant to evoke the expansiveness of the American West. However, these newer paintings also revisit some of the heavier paint application and contrasting underpainting that were hallmarks of the geometric works I made in the late 1990s. I have also begun to incorporate silkscreened and spray-stenciled graphic elements: symbols, numbers, and scraps of text that build in layers with loose brush strokes, oil stick scribbles, paint drips, and card-edge impasto marks. The resulting paintings work at several scales, where an all-over impression of landscape dissolves as the viewer approaches and discovers detail in the layers.
